Strong defense, timely offense helps PHS drop Ticonderoga

PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh High jumped out to a big lead Saturday and never let Ticonderoga grab any momentum.

The Hornets (2-4) owned a 20-0 lead before the Sentinels (1-5) could get on the board and coasted to a 27-6 win in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference football.

Plattsburgh's defense forced five turnovers, grabbing four interceptions and recovering one fumble, and set up the Hornets' offense to make big plays throughout the game.

"All three facets really complemented each other," Plattsburgh coach Mike Bordeau said.

"The special teams did well this week. Coach (Mike) Deloria did a good job with them this week. Coach (Neil) Bowlen had a good game plan. Offensively, we were just clicking, and everything fell into place. This was just a great team effort."

The Hornets' Liam Perkins threw two touchdown scores and passed for 108 yards, while Jayvon Carpenter led Plattsburgh's ground attack with 90 yards and a touchdown.

Foster Ovios helped highlight the Hornets' strong defensive performance with two interceptions, and Ian DeTulleo and Dylan Garrant both had a pick.

Perkins connected with Garrant for a 24-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the second quarter to open scoring and help send Plattsburgh into halftime with a 7-0 advantage.

Carpenter punched in an 8-yard run with 8:35 remaining in the third quarter before Myles King caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Perkins to make it 20-0 just over four minutes later.

Carpenter and his offensive line clicked throughout the game and established a strong running presence that helped the Hornets excel.

"When I get blocks from my guys, I just have to do the best I can to finish plays off," Carpenter said. "We were really able to pick up our momentum with the running game.

"We all came out with the same plan we always have going into games, and this win is a huge confidence boost because we know if we all do the right things, we know we will win.

"We have the team, and we have the confidence. We just have to go out there and play."

Ticonderoga found its way into the scoring column with 10:21 remaining in regulation thanks to a 1-yard touchdown pass from Terrence Benedict to Monty Benedict.

Terrence Benedict finished with 208 passing yards, but the Hornets' defense made it seem like much less, shutting down the Sentinels on multiple occasions in key situations.

"We have been putting in a lot of work on defense, and in the secondary, we have really been pushing to get better," Ovios said.

"We came through this week and made the plays. We had four picks and even had a fumble recovery. Those five turnovers were really big for us and helped put our offense in a spot where they could do damage."

Plattsburgh's Ben Bordeau rounded out scoring with a 15-yard rush into the end zone for the Hornets late in the fourth quarter.

In the final week of the regular season, Ticonderoga hosts AuSable Valley at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, and Plattsburgh travels to Saranac for a 1:30 p.m. contest Saturday, Oct. 19.

"In every game we play, we try to prepare and have the approach that will lead us to success," Mike Bordeau said.

"In this game, we were fortunate that everything came together. We want to have another good week of practice and prepare for next Saturday and see good results. All we want to do is come out and play better and better each week."
