SUNYAC names Massaria Goalie of the Week

CORTLAND — Exactly half of the six 2015 SUNY Athletic Conference Goalie of the Week awards thus far are firmly in the hands of Plattsburgh State junior Matt Massaria.

The Floral Park product made sure of that when the league office announced that Massaria earned his second straight SUNYAC Goalie of the Week honor by way of another strong pair of outings between the pipes.

In search of just their second-ever win against St. Lawrence Wednesday, the Cardinals turned to Massaria to step up in net. The junior didn't back away from the challenge.

He played all 60 minutes and made 12 stops as the Cardinals scored an 11-7 win over their North Country rival. It marked the second straight time Plattsburgh has downed the Saints.

On Saturday, Massaria and the Cardinals returned home to the Field House Lacrosse Complex for the first time since March 11 and proceeded to put a big hurting on Geneseo.

In the 57 minutes he spent stationed in the Cardinals' goal mouth, Massaria made 13 saves and allowed just six goals in Plattsburgh's 16-6 win over the Knights.

Massaria's save percentage of .636 ranks second in the SUNYAC and is a big reason why the Cardinals are off to their best start in program history. Plattsburgh is 9-3, which includes a 2-0 mark in the SUNYAC. Additionally, the Cardinals are receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll.

Two more SUNYAC showdowns are on the docket for Massaria and the Cardinals this week.

First up is a Wednesday battle at Oneonta State (4-5, 1-1). That tilt is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at All College Field.
