SCHENECTADY — Matt McCarthy had two goals, and Ian Winchell had a goal and an assist to propel Schuylerville to a 3-0 win over Saranac in the NYSPHSAA Class B boys soccer sub-regional round Wednesday at Mohonasen High School.

The Section II-champion Black Horses (14-7) take on Section X’s Ogdensburg in the regional final Saturday at Potsdam. The winner advances to next weekend’s semifinal round in Middletown.

Saranac, with just one senior starter, was coming off a 1-0 win over Plattsburgh in the Section VII championship game. The No. 9-ranked Chiefs finish the season 12-4-3.

Saranac coach Calvin Hamel said his squad ran into a “very, very good team” that deserved to win.

“They were the better team (Wednesday), but I’m proud of my guys. We battled, we played with class like we have all season,” Hamel said. “We’ll be back next year. This is just going to be fuel for the fire for us.”

No. 5 ranked Schuylerville, holding an edge in experience with eight senior starters, held up a relentless attack against Saranac throughout much of the first half but couldn’t find the back of the net.

Saranac goalkeeper Branden Ashley was a large reason for that, coming up with timely stops, including an aggressive charge and deflection on a near-goal from Winchell with 25 minutes left.

Ashley, a sophomore, finished with six saves.

“He’s only going to get better,” Hamel said. “He was big for us.”

Winchell eventually broke through with 9:31 left in the half, sliding to narrowly knock in a pass from Zachary Saddlemire past Ashley.

Three minutes into the second half, McCarthy headed in a long pass from Winchell to double the lead. McCarthy tallied his second goal of the game with 13:55 left to make it 3-0.

“We had some chances where maybe we would have banged one home, maybe we could have put a little pressure on them,” Hamel said.

Hamel praised Jake Schiraldi, Saranac’s lone senior starter, for what he brought to the program.

“What he’s done for this program hasn’t gone unnoticed, by me, by people in the section,” Hamel said. “We’ve created a good program here – we’re moving in the right direction. We’ve been in the sectional finals three years in a row. We’ve been down here two out of the last three years.”

Hamel also praised the leadership of senior reserves Dylan Paiser and Nicholas Liberty.

Schiraldi said this season meant everything to him.

“No one thought we were going to do it, and we did it,” he said. “It was awesome.”
