SARANAC — The Saranac boys’ and Seton Catholic girls’ cross country teams opened the 2014 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference season with a pair of wins Thursday.

Zach LePage paced the Chiefs by scoring an overall victory in the boys’ race, timing in at 17 minutes and 15 seconds.

Seton Catholic’s Caleb Moore (17:34) and Kolby Kitterle of Saranac (18:45) each earned a spot on the podium.

Justin Liechty (Saranac, 18:57) and Issaiah Maddix (Peru, 19:24) concluded the event’s top-five finishers.

Saranac defeated Peru 17-42 before upending Seton Catholic 19-42. Peru scored a 26-33 win over Seton Catholic.

In the girls’ meet, Seton Catholic’s Margaret Champagne out-raced teammate Sofia Dejordy for the overall victory.

Champagne (20:06) and Dejordy (20:50) were followed by Elysha O’Connell (Saranac, 21:14), Lea Dejordy (Seton Catholic, 21:50) and Maddy Munn (Seton Catholic, 21:54).

Seton Catholic defeated Saranac 20-35 and Peru 17-38, while Saranac edged Peru 25-30.
