Red Storm top Vikings

MINEVILLE — Rhett Darrah connected with Sam Donaldson for the go-ahead touchdown with 9:01 remaining, and Saranac Lake held off Moriah for a 29-22 win Friday at Linney Field.

The Red Storm (4-1), clinging to a one-score lead, stopped the Vikings (2-3) at Saranac Lake's 7-yard line with 3:09 left.

David Warner's 35-yard reception on 3rd-and-8 from the Red Storm's 17 iced the game with about two minutes to play.

“That's (Donaldson's) first game back,” said Darrah, who accounted for 346 yards of total offense. “He's been out since Week 1. He had a guy trailing him, but he's quick, and I just put it up there for him, and he went and grabbed it.”

Saranac Lake forced Moriah to turn the football over on downs on its last three drives, getting stops at the Red Storm's 14, 9 and 7-yard lines.

The Vikings tied the score at 22-all on their opening drive of the second half, when Braden Swan scored on a 9-yard touchdown run.

The first half looked more like a track meet, as both teams combined for 38 points and 489 yards.

They exchanged the lead five times in the opening 24 minutes.

Darrah threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for 135 yards and a score.

Saranac Lake piled up 423 yards of offense.

Maddox Blaise was a bright spot for Moriah, carrying the ball 32 times for 178 yards.

Swan added a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings.

The Red Storm will host Beekmantown (4-1) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, with first place in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference on the line.

“Listen, we're excited to get to work on Monday and just get better as a team,” Saranac Lake coach Eric Bennett said. “As much as we have play-makers, we also had some penalties that were just unacceptable. We gotta right the ship and just keep moving forward.”
