Trips to regional games at stake for local soccer squads

PLATTSBURGH — Three local soccer teams are playing in NYSPHSAA sub-regionals today.

The AuSable Valley girls as well as the Saranac and Saranac Lake boys will all be in action.





at Potsdam High School

AuSable Valley vs. Brushton-Moira, 6 p.m.

The Panthers topped Madrid-Waddington, 2-1, to take home the Class C title in Section X.

Brushton-Moira was the top seed in the Section X tournament.

The Patriots are fresh off a 4-1 win against Northern Adirondack that secured their second sectional championship in as many years.

Jenna Stanley is AuSable Valley's leading scorer with 13 goals and six assists, and Koree Stillwell has recorded nine shutouts this season.




at Mohonasen High School

Saranac Lake vs. Voorheesville, 3:30 p.m.

The Blackbirds knocked off previously undefeated Lake George, 3-0, to take home Class C bragging rights in Section II and punch a ticket to a state game against the Chiefs.

Derek Moore, Jack Ensslin and Shaun Turnbull were all responsible for one of Voorheesville's tallies in its win against the Warriors.

Camden Reiley's goal midway through the first half lifted the Red Storm to a 1-0 victory over Lake Placid in the Section VII Class C championship.

Saranac Lake sports an 8-7-1 record.

Nick Kelting has scored a team-high seven goals for the Red Storm.



at Mohonasen High School

Saranac vs. Schuylerville, 6 p.m.

The Black Horses pulled off quite an upset, knocking off top-seeded Ichabod Crane, 2-1, to win their first Section II crown.

Ian Winchell and Zach Saddlemire both had a goal in the win for Schuylerville.

The Black Horses enter with a 13-7 record.

The Chiefs held off Plattsburgh High, 1-0, to make it to state play.

Zashon Abrams headed in a cross from Nikalas Hamel in the second half to record the game-winner against the Hornets.

Saranac is 12-3-3 and led by Hamel who has 14 goals and six assists for 34 points.
