PSU Senior Awards Night tonight

PLATTSBURGH -- Plattsburgh State University will honor its senior male and female scholar/athletes tonight in a ceremony in Giltz Auditorium of Hawkins Hall.

The media, public and parents are invited to attend the free event, which begins at 6 p.m. A catered reception will follow in the Hawkins Courtyard.

Men's soccer league schedules meeting

PLATTSBURGH -- The North Country Soccer League will hold a meeting May 15, at 7 p.m., at Olive Ridley's in Plattsburgh. The eight-game regular season will begin the second week of June.

AUSABLE FORKS -- The AuSable Forks Fastpitch Softball Tournament Committee will hold a meeting Wednesday, at 7 p.m., at the American Legion In Au Sable Forks. All committee members are urged to attend.

Trout Unlimited schedules meeting, election

PLATTSBURGH -- Trout Unlimited will hold its annual meeting and election of officers Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Gander Mountain lodge room. All are welcome.

The agenda will include a discussion on the coal tar cleanup in the Saranac River.

Blazers host 44 teams in A.A.U. tourney

SARANAC LAKE -- Saranac Lake and Chateaugay entries finished first in the North Country Blazers Basketball Association's Sixth-Annual A.A.U. Tournament held last weekend.

Saranac Lake won the sixth-grade and eighth-grade boys divisions while Chateaugay took the 10th-grade boys and Malone, the fifth-grade girls.

Women's mountain bike clinics set for July

WILMINGTON -- High Peaks Cyclery will host two women-only downhill mountain bike clinics featuring 2006 National Downhill Champion Tara Llanes. The clinics will be held at the Whiteface Downhill Park July 6-7.

All women will receive a full day of personal instruction including everything from setting up the suspension properly to getting more comfortable in tricky terrain to getting over personal fears. Each rider also receives a day lift-ticket, lunch, swag bag, special clinic t-shirt and invitation to an after-clinic party.

Llanes, a strong hopeful for the U.S. BMX Olympic Team for the 2008 Bejing Olympics, will be joined by three women guest instructors to ensure a low student-teacher ratio.

The clinics will be limited to 20 women each day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and lasting about seven hours, followed by an hour or so of freeriding and a question-and-answer session. The after-clinic party is on Saturday, July 7.

Dahlin SUNYAC Player of the Week

FREDONIA -- Plattsburgh State's Matt Dahlin is the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week in baseball, for the period ending Sunday. The senior from Cohoes (Stillwater High School) employed his versatility to earn the honor for the first time this season, and helped lead the Cardinals to a 5-2 record for the week, including 5-1 in the conference, as the team clinched a spot in the SUNYAC tournament.

At the plate he hit .389 for the week that included a 3-for-6 performance in a win against No. 3-ranked Cortland, which was the first time in 31 years that the Cardinals had beaten the Red Dragons.

He also went 1-0 in two appearances with a 2.61 earned-run average on the mound.

Zweig, Davids honored by SUNYAC

FREDONIA -- The State University of New York Athletic Conference named Plattsburgh State juniors Stephanie Zweig and Kirby Davids Co-Pitcher of the Week and Player of the Week, respectively, for last week, the league announced on Monday.

Zweig, a junior from West Nyack, recorded a 6-1 record with a 1.47 ERA during the past week. In 43 innings pitched, she allowed just 10 runs on 32 hits and had 54 strikeouts. She held the opponents to a .199 batting average.

Zweig finished the regular season with a 13-4 record and a 1.43 ERA.

Davids, a junior from Brisbane, Australia led Plattsburgh State to a 9-3 record last week with 12 games in six days. She was 20-for-32 at the plate for a .625 batting average with three doubles, a triple, five RBI and 12 runs scored. The shortstop was 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Defensively, she had a .967 fielding percentage with 17 putouts and 12 assists with just one error.

North Bowl nine-pin mixed league forming

PLATTSBURGH -- North Bowl Lanes is forming a fun nine-pin mixed league. Any combination of four adult bowlers will comprise a team.

Harlem Rockets to play at Moriah

PORT HENRY -- The Moriah Booster Club will again host the Harlem Rockets May 13, at 6 p.m., in the Moriah gymnasium. The Rockets are a comedy basketball team in the mold of the Harlem Globetrotters.

WILLSBORO -- The Willsboro Central School girls' varsity softball team has qualified for the New York State High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete Team Award with a 90.43 average.

Carpenter memorial hoop tourney June 10

PORT HENRY -- The Brian T. Carpenter Memorial 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will be held Sunday, June 10, at Moriah Central School.

The double-elimination event will begin at 10 a.m. There can be up to four players per team. Teams can by comprised of boys, girls or co-ed, and age divisions include: 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, Over-18 and Old Timers (40 and over).

Schroon Lake sponsors all-year fishing contest

SCHROON LAKE -- The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring an all-year fishing contest with awards and trophies to be presented on July 4 at the Chamber of Commerce office building for adults and kids.

Small mouth bass, large mouth bass, speckled trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, northern pike, salmon and pickerel all count in the contest.

The fish must be caught in waters located in the Town of Schroon or North Hudson, and participants are asked to photograph their fish and turn it in with the entry. Weigh stations are located at the Paradox General Store, Mount Severance Country Store, DeCesare's Pizzeria, Bobcat Sports and Schroon Lake Marina.
