Saranac Lake boys, girls sweep CVAC openers

SARANAC LAKE — The Saranac Lake boys started their season off with a clean sweep in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference cross country competition Tuesday.

The Red Storm defeated Plattsburgh High, 15-50, Lake Placid, 17-46, and Beekmantown, 15-50.

James Catania finished first for Saranac Lake with a time of 16:28, and Peter and Andrew Fogarty rounded out the top three, finishing second and third, respectively.

Michael Skutt, with a time of 17:23, led the Blue Bombers to a 25-30 win against the Hornets and an 18-37 victory over the Eagles.

Plattsburgh got one win with a 27-39 defeat of Beekmantown, and Ethan Mullholland (18:22) was the Hornets’ top finisher.

The Saranac Lake girls also picked up a trifecta of victories and were powered by Gwen Mader, who took third place with a time of 22:29.

Harley Cohen of Lake Placid crossed the finish line first, clocking in at 21:40, and Plattsburgh’s Nora Graves snagged second place by finishing at 22:07.

CLINTONVILLE — Logan VanBuren highlighted a great day for Moriah/Boquet Valley with a first-place finish, crossing the line at 17:43.

Northeastern Clinton’s Thomas Gilbo (19:02) and AuSable Valley’s Spencer Daby (19:29) completed the top three, serving as the top finishers for their respective squads.

Lily Potthast broke her own school home-course record (20:58) by turning in a time of 20:37, which captured first place for the Patriots.

Moriah/Boquet Valley picked up three wins and was led by Sophia McKiernan’s time of 26:01.

Madison Flora (26:00) grabbed second place for Ticonderoga.

SARANAC — Jake Glicksman (17:04) and Luke Moore (18:01) powered the Knights to two victories by finishing first and second, respectively.

Andrew Woodruff (18:08) and Sam Carter (18:29) helped the Chiefs to their lone win of the day, and Sam DeJordy took home fifth place for Seton Catholic.

Rachael Woodruff recorded a first-place finish to lead the Saranac girls to a sweep, finishing more than two minutes faster than Seton Catholic’s Faline Yang, who came in second.

The Indians’ Harley Gainer took third with a team-best time of 22:19.
