PLATTSBURGH -- Coach Dave Clausen said his Utica Pioneers get a boost whenever they can face Plattsburgh State and just keep the game close.

They did one better Saturday.

Michelle Witz scored with five seconds left in overtime to give Utica its first-ever win against Plattsburgh State, 2-1.

MacKenzie Roy netted the tying goal, and Jill Doherty played a strong game in the Utica nets with 31 saves. The Pioneers (3-1, 1-1 ECAC West) lost 2-0 at Stafford Ice Arena Friday night to drop to 0-20-2 against the Cardinals.

"It's hard to put it in words right now how excited our whole program, our team and our school is," Clausen said. "Obviously there's always been something elite about the Plattsburgh team ... and so just to play tight games with them is always a big thing for us, a morale boost, as we move forward in our season.

"For our program, this obviously puts us on the map. We're obviously excited now, and anything can happen."

After a scoreless third period, the teams headed into a five-minute overtime tied 1-1. Plattsburgh State's Danielle Beattie stopped a point-blank shot and the rebound with just over a minute left. Then the Pioneers came down on a rush and Witz put the puck in as the clock was winding down.

"It's a two-on-two," Plattsburgh State coach Kevin Houle said. "It's a two-on-two. We have a goalie who can block shots. You don't need to be scrambling and falling. We had two players on the ice, and they slipped in behind us and the puck ends up in the net.

"So it's just a lack of poise in those situations. You gotta play the game for 60 minutes, and you gotta play it the same way for 60 minutes -- with poise and confidence. Just because there's 15 seconds left and they're on a rush, you don't need to be flopping all over the ice as we did."

Jodie Galluzzi assisted on the goal for her second helper of the day. Witz also had an assist on Utica's first goal.

"We actually shuffled our lines after (Friday's) game in an attempt to get a little bit more offense (Saturday)," Clausen said. "Michelle did a great job. She finished. That line was out there for both goals today, so I can't be happier with what they've done."

The Cardinals outshot the Pioneers 32-17 Saturday.

Plattsburgh State (2-1, 2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Danielle Blanchard got the puck to Kate Fairfield right out front and Fairfield slid it in the left side. Stephanie Moberg also assisted on the power-play marker at 14:08.

Roy tied it up 13:23 into the second with a shot from the left circle that deflected in high.

On Friday, Clausen called Plattsburgh State the best in the country at protecting a lead. He said the Pioneers were able to come back Saturday by focusing on playing hard each shift regardless of the score.

Plattsburgh State had some good chances in the third, including a three-on-one near the middle of the period. Shay Bywater skated the puck down the right side and fed Lindsay Brown out front. Brown's shot was stopped, and Blanchard came in for the rebound but lifted the puck high. The Cardinals had an 8-2 edge in shots in the first 10 minutes and finished the period with a 12-5 advantage.

"I thought we played well and kept the pressure on them for the most part, but it just wasn't enough pressure," Houle said.

Beattie made 15 saves for Plattsburgh State.

Houle said the Cardinals actually played better Saturday than they did in Friday's win but still not the way they need to.

"I thought we were better offensively; I thought we were better defensively," he said. "They played great around their goalie. Their goalie played really well. And that happens.

"But we need to do the little things. We need to play with poise. And it's not a freshman. It's juniors and seniors -- it's everybody. When the puck gets back in our end, we're taking the easy way out sometimes, and we're not bearing down and playing the way we have to play."
