PLAYOFF FOOTBALL: Beekmantown, Saranac Lake look to extend seasons

PLATTSBURGH — Two Section VII football teams will enter into state play and look to advance to the regional round next week.

Class B

at Plattsburgh High

Beekmantown (6-2) vs.

Potsdam (6-2), 7 p.m.

It's a rematch from last year's sub-regional, which featured a 15-0 win by the Eagles.

The Sandstoners won the Section X title thanks to a commanding 39-6 defeat of Franklin Academy.

Will Varney is the player to watch for Potsdam.

The running back has accumulated more than 1,000 rushing yards for the third season in a row, and the Sandstoners rely on him heavily to carry their offense.

Zach Kirka anchors Potsdam at the quarterback position.

Beekmantown won its second consecutive sectional crown last weekend, topping Plattsburgh High, 34-19.

Kaden Myers ran wild in the game, scoring four touchdowns on the ground and rushing for 283 yards.

Myers leads Beekmantown with 782 rushing yards.

On paper, this game promises to showcase plenty of running.

Class C

at Ogdensburg Free Academy

Saranac Lake (6-3) vs.

Gouverneur (8-0), 1:30 p.m.

The Wildcats took home the Section X crown with a 25-8 victory over Ogdensburg Free Academy.

The Blue Devils were the top seed in Class C for Section X.

Gouverneur did all its damage on the ground in the game.

The Blue Devils Cayden Stowell scored two touchdowns, and Joe Cummings and Caleb Farr both found the end zone once.

The Red Storm won their first sectional championship since 2016 by defeating AuSable Valley, 31-26, in a shootout.

Rhett Darrah leads the way for Saranac Lake at quarterback, having passed for 1,328 yards and rushed for an additional 440 yards.

Ben Munn showcases a team-high 457 rushing yards, and David Warner (349) and Jeffery LaVair (332) power the Red Storm in receiving.
