Plattsburgh comes up short in SUNYAC final

ONEONTA — Second-seeded Plattsburgh State men's soccer lost to top-seeded Oneonta, 1-0, in the SUNYAC Tournament championship match on Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.

With the loss, the Cardinals finished the 2019 season with an 11-8-0 overall record, including a 7-2-0 mark in SUNYAC play.

With the win, the Red Dragons (17-2-0, 8-1-0 SUNYAC) earned the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Plattsburgh and Oneonta, which is ranked No. 10 in latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll, played a tightly contested match with neither team scoring.

At halftime, the Red Dragons held a 5-2 edge in shots and the Cardinals had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Early in the second half, Plattsburgh's senior forward Sean Cray had an opportunity in the 52nd minute, but his shot went high.

Oneonta then struck for what turned out to be the only goal of the match in the 54th minute.

Witman Hernandez took a pass from Tristan Battistoni in the 18-yard box and unleashed a hard shot.

Junior goalkeeper Patrick Feeley got his hands on the shot, but the ball got past Feeley and into the goal to make the score 1-0.

Hernandez's goal was his 23rd of the season.

The Cardinals kept fighting and had four shots in the second half.

One chance came on a free kick in the 73rd minute when senior midfielder Jimmy Marchena took a shot that went wide.

The Cardinals attempted to push the ball forward and generate chances late in the match, but time ran out as Plattsburgh lost 1-0.

Feeley made three saves in goal for the Cardinals, and Nate Hanna did not have to make a save as he earned the shutout for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta held a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in shots on goal.

Corner kicks were 6-3 in favor of the Red Dragons.

Junior defender Luke Rapaport, sophomore midfielder Ankit Patel and Marchena were named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team.

They were instrumental in helping Plattsburgh reach the SUNYAC Tournament championship match.

Rapaport scored the game-winning goal and also tallied an assist in the Cardinals' 2-0 win over third-seeded Buffalo State in the SUNYAC semifinals.
