PERU -- Tori Buck's two-run single with no one out in the top of the eighth inning proved to be enough for Plattsburgh High School as the Hornets defeated Peru, 16-12, in an exciting extra-inning Champlain Valley Athletic Conference softball contest Saturday morning.

The Hornets held an 11-9 lead heading into the bottom half of the seventh. The Indians, however, forced extra-innings when Lindsey Duquette hit a two-run homer after an Erin Sullivan single to open the inning.

The Indians were able to get the next two runners on base, but were unable to bring them around to win the game.

The Hornets followed with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by Buck's two-run single.

"They just did a better job of getting runners across in the eighth inning than we did in the seventh," Peru head coach Larry Ewald said.

Buck, Caitlynn Hecox and Lauren Tyler all had three hits for PHS (2-1). Krissy Flynn and Dana Curle added two each.

Jessica Ewald, Sullivan and Duquette paced the Indians (1-2) with three hits apiece. Sullivan also homered.

Jen Menard, who took over for Curle in the sixth inning, wound up with the pitching win for the Hornets. Kelly Kezar ended up with the loss.

"Honestly, this was a back-and-forth game with both teams battling back when they were behind," said Ewald. "It was a good and competitive game."
