SARANAC — Runs were at a premium Sunday as the Fourth Ward Cardinals maintained first place in the Champlain Valley Baseball League by splitting a twinbill with the Peabody’s Padres.
The Padres (8-4) recorded a 3-1 victory in the first game and the Cardinals (10-4) reversed the score in the nightcap.
Matt Rivers outdueled Tom Neale in the opener as Rivers struck out six, did not walk anyone and allowed only two hits — singles by Alex Lafountain and Eric Dwyer.
Brady Burleigh paced the Padres with a single and RBI triple in the sixth inning. Matt Hart added two hits and Shane Perrotte a RBI single.
The Cardinals, however, won the second game as Will Flynn scattered 10 hits in going the distance for the win to best Kalob Drollette.
The Cardinals broke a 1-all tie with two runs in the fourth inning.
Dwyer had a RBI single, while C.J. Worley, Eric Rock and Ben Weightman had the other hits off Drollette.
Jeff Norton and Jason Favaro led the Padres with three hits apiece and Perrotte chipped in with a triple.

PERU — The young Adams Glass Dodgers continued to play well and evened their record at 6-6 with a doubleheader sweep of the Fourth Ward A’s.
Once again, the Dodgers got strong pitching from Luis Pepen Matos and Ethan King, who went the distance for wins in the first and second games, respectively.
Nick Demarais led the offense in the opener with two singles, a double and four RBI. Marcus Lefebvre added three hits and two RBI, while Josh Douglas added an inside-the-park homer in the fourth inning and Kyle McCarthy a triple.
Dan Elliott paced the A’s with two doubles and a single. Tyler Mesec chipped in with a couple of singles.
In the nightcap, Lefebvre added four more hits and two RBI, while Demarais followed with three hits and two RBI. Dalton Castine contributed two singles and two RBI, and McCarthy added two singles.
Jake Richards rapped a two-run homer for the A’s and Michael Howard finished with a couple of singles.

LYON MOUNTAIN — David Waldron pitched a five-inning, three-hit shutout in the opener and the Lyon Mountain Miners went on to take two games from the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx.
Waldron struck out seven and walked one.
Justin Mahan and Kasey Favreau each had a single and double for the Miners, while Kyle Kowalowski, Waldron and Kris Chase also had doubles.
In the second contest, winning pitcher Chase finished with three hits and three RBI and Favreau three hits and two RBI for Lyon Mountain.
Longtime CVBL standout Scott Baker, who also rapped out three hits, pitched the seventh inning on his 51st birthday.
Mahan, Kyle Kowalowski and Reilly Lawless all finished with two hits apiece for the Miners.
For the Timberjaxx, Josh Chapman went four-for-four, while Nick Dodd, added two hits and two RBI, and both Austin Bradish and Steve Bedard two hits apiece.
