BURLINGTON, Vt. — The Plattsburgh High girls hockey team shut out Middlebury High, 5-0, at the third annual Hockey for Hope Tournament in Vermont Sunday.
“The girls gave 110% effort and our d-zone coverage only got better as the weekend progressed,” Hornets coach Trevor Cameron said. “They played with poise and mental toughness.”
Reylyn Giroux opened scoring for the Hornets at the 4:14 mark of the first period, and Avery Holland put Plattsburgh ahead 2-0 with a goal at the 6:54 mark.
Giroux and Holland each scored one more goal in the second period to bring the Hornets to a 4-0 lead against Middlebury.
“We have to give credit to our penalty killers as well for shutting down five Middlebury power plays,” Cameron said.
McKenzie Brown notched the final goal for Plattsburgh in the third period at the 3:52 mark.
The Hornets Amelia Lebrun turned away 11 shots, and Middlebury's Lydia Deppman tallied 19 saves.
“Amelia Lebrun had her first varsity shutout and Reylyn Giroux was named the tournament MVP with four goals,” Cameron said. “She's a strong player along with the rest of our team.”
