Steven Crider of Lake Clear prepares to place his walleye on the scales for Hope Coryer of the Plattsburgh Rotary Club to weigh Friday morning in the first day competition of the 23rd annual Rotary International Fishing Classic. Crider is a member of Team Fishheads, which has won the team division the past two years.

PLATTSBURGH -- The Fishheads are back and making a strong run at a third straight team championship in the 23rd Annual Plattsburgh Rotary International Fishing Classic.

The group jumped into the lead Friday, Day 1 of the three-day Lake Champlain tournament, with 692 points, just ahead of Red Eye of Apple Island, Vt., with 626 points.

Steven Crider of Lake Clear netted a 7-pound, 9-ounce walleye to take the lead in that division and put the Fishheads first in the team standings.

The rest of the Fishheads are Rick Ryder, Brushton; Doug Kipping, Paul Smiths; and Bruce Baker, Saranac Lake.

A Fairfax, Vt. angler is a strong contender in the salmon division. Jim Hallock's 8-pound, 4½-pound catch off Apple Island, Vt. came in just under last year's winning salmon that tipped the scales at 8 lbs. 6½.

Randy Trombley of Mooers hauled in the biggest laker, a 12-pound, 6½-ounce catch weighed in at Plattsburgh.

The number of anglers registering for the tournament this year was just over 500 and a steady stream kept Rotarians at the weigh stations busy throughout the day.

Bonnie Black, tournament chair, attributed it to ideal weather.

"The seven weigh stations around the lake reported the weather was perfect throughout the day," Black added.

All weigh stations will open again today and Sunday at 8 a.m. Weigh stations will close Saturday at 6 p.m., except the weigh station next to Clare and Carl's Dockside next to the Plattsburgh Boat Basin, which will close at 8 p.m.

The weigh stations will all close at noon Sunday, and the final awards ceremony will be held at Clare and Carl's Dockside that afternoon at 4 p.m.

Updates on the tournament standings can be heard every hour on Marine Channel 68 between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. and updates will be recorded on the Fishline (toll-free number: 1-877-519-7942) after 8:30 p.m. each day with the top five catches in each category.
