PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State men's hockey team broke loose for a season high in goals scored Friday night.
It proved to be fortunate because the Cardinals had more turnovers than a bakery.
Liam Lawson and Ryan Hogg tallied two goals apiece as the Cardinals survived a 7-5 victory over Potsdam in State University of New York Athletic Conference play.
Plattsburgh State (3-3-1, 3-3-1) never trailed in the game against the Bears (1-5-1, 1-5-1), but couldn't relax until Philip Middleton scored into an empty net with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to seal it.
“We were fortunate to get a 7-5 victory,” Plattsburgh State coach Steve Moffat said. “We didn't have a good showing on defense, and our transition defense was pretty bad.”
It's rare when a goaltender allows five goals and still has a solid game. But, that was the case for the Cardinals' Jimmy Poreda, who made 39 saves on 44 shots.
“Jimmy was awesome — he played very well,” Moffat said. “We left a lot of their guys open in front of our net, and we allowed way too many shots on goal.
“We played well defensively in our first five games, but I don't know what has happened in our last two.”
Still, it was a win, and the Cardinals are unbeaten (3-0-1) in their last four games heading into the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout next weekend at Stafford Ice Arena.
“We did what we had to do to win,” Moffat said. “We won the game, got two points and that can't be taken away from us.
“We were able to score some goals tonight and did a better job getting traffic in front of their net.”
Brendan Young and Lawson scored goals less than a minute apart at 13:11 and 14:02, respectively, in the first period to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
Plattsburgh State, however, allowed a four-on-two into its zone late in the stanza and Nate Zweig tallied to pull the Bears to within one.
Plattsburgh State would then go up 5-2 in the first 7:03 of the second on goals by Hogg, Lawson and Christian Dahl, with Joseph Richardson countering for Potsdam.
Bryce Ferrell's goal with 6:42 left in the second brought the Bears to within 5-3 after two.
Hogg's second goal of the contest gave the Cardinals a 6-3 lead in the third, only to have a couple of bad turnovers lead to two goals by the Bears' Vincent Guimond, the second making it 6-5 with still 4:16 remaining in regulation.
Plattsburgh State, however, held on when Middleton, from deep in his own end, sent the puck into an open net.
“We can learn a lot from this game, especially when it comes to our transition defense,” Moffat said.
