10 YEARS AGO (2009)

Freshman Brandon Laurin converts a penalty kick with 2:21 remaining in the second half to lift Chazy to a 1-0 victory over Northville and the Eagles' second state championship in Class D boys' soccer. Kaleb Snide is named tournament MVP.

Former Saranac Lake standout Brittany Meade scores the tying goal 16:46 into the third and Steph Moore gets the game-winner 1:03 into overtime  as Plattsburgh State rallies to defeat Elmira College 4-3. 

Errol Daniyan scores 39 points and grabs 21 rebounds in two games to earn MVP honors while leading Plattsburgh State to the Cardinal Classic title. The Cards defeat Husson 72-70 in the final. Former NAC star Steve Thomas nets 14 for the Cards in the title triumph.

Kris Bain tallies 23 points to lead Indian Lake/Long Lake over Crown Point 44-40. John Budwick finishes with 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers.

Sophomore forward Kelley Steadman (Plattsburgh/Northwood School) of top-ranked Mercyhurst College is named College Hockey America Player of the Week. She scores a goal and picked up 2 assists in a 1-0-1 week at Niagara University.

Senior forward Jason Williams from Plattsburgh has 3 goals, including a shorthanded score, and 2 assists for Colgate University.

Sophomore cornerback Alec Currier of Peru appears in all Alfred University games, recording 35 solo tackles and 25 assisted for the 8-2 Purple Saxons. He also comes up with 3 interceptions.

Jeremy Drowne (34:37) and Michelle Kirby Post (42:09) lead the way in the 10K event of the 32nd Annual Peru Lions Club Turkey Trot. Matt Medeiros (16:37) and Sara Facteau (18:51) win the 5K. A record 347 enter the 5K and 129 the 10K with an additional 103 participants in the mile run.

Randolph scores twice in the last minute of the first half to break open a 14-0 game, en route to a 41-0 triumph over Moriah in the state Class D football championship.

Plattsburgh State battles Norwich University to a 1-1 standoff before falling 4-3 in the shootout of the PrimeLink Classic in Northfield, Vt. Cardinal goaltender Ryan Williams, who stops 35 shots in the final, and forward Dan Sliasis are named to the all-tournament team.

20 YEARS AGO (1999)

Plattsburgh State’s Andy Johnson sets school records of 55.19 seconds for the 100-yard butterfly and 22.45 for the 50 freestyle at the North Country Invitational in Potsdam.

Erin McKane scores 13 points and Lisa Hudson, 10, as Keene tops Long Lake 34-30 to win the Mountaineer tourney in Olmstedville. McKane and Amanda House are named to the all-tournament team.

Glenn Van Houten and Kenny Hackett each come up with 4 sacks while Steve St. Clair and Jamie Lozier are the offensive standouts as the Falcon Cable Stars whip the Peru Silverbacks 37-12 to win the flag football title.

Birger Ohlsson wins the Peru Turkey Trot in 31:35 while Patty McCormick finished 10th out of 252 runners with a time of 41:04. Ken Drake (16:25) and Julie Canino (18:57) are the 5K winners.

25 YEARS AGO (1994)

Plattsburgh State defeats the University of Connecticut, 5-0, in the final of the Cardinal Pepsi Hockey Classic. Steve Moffat is named MVP and is joined on the all-tournament team by Mike D’Amelio, Jason Desloover and Billy Sammartino.

Peru native and former MAI and Plattsburgh State volleyball coach Betty Ralston records her 300th career coaching victory. Ralston is in her 12th season at Eastern Illinois.

 

Tournament MVP Shannon Brock scores 30 points and grabes 18 rebounds to lead Schroon Lake past Elizabethtown-Lewis, 56-44, in the final of the Schroon Lake Thanksgiving Tournament. Heather Tenney leads the Lions with 16 points.

30 YEARS AGO (1989)

Bruce Higgenbotham scores 2 TDs, Rick Voudren adds one and Ian Breen hits Corey Bishop with a scoring pass as Saranac Lake defeats Taconic Hills 28-14 in a Class C intersectional playoff game at the Carrier Dome.

The Swedick brothers account for 4 touchdowns in Johnstown’s 27-6 victory over Seton Catholic in the Class D intersectional game at the Dome. Chad Martinovich passes to Jay Perras for the Irish score.

Denfield James scores 31 points to lead Clinton CC to a 104-86 win over NCCC. Rich Trowbridge tallies 23 for the Saints.

Lori Kirkey leads the NCCC women to a 78-59 win over CCC. Michelle Abare leads the Cougars with 22 points.

Terry Guynup runs 20 yards with a blocked punt recovery to score and Chance Rambin adds the 2-point conversion as Nadim’s knocks off top-seed Ting’s 8-6 to win the Flag Football crown. Kelly Rabideau of Nadim’s is the Defensive MVP while Robin Vaughan of Ting’s is the Offensive MVP.

40 YEARS AGO (1979)

Phil Hewitt scores two goals and Lee Jubert, one, as Plattsburgh High tops Middlebury, 3-1, in the first high-school hockey game played at the new Glens Falls Civic Center.

Jim Patterson scores three goals in the first period to spur Lake Placid on to a 9-4 win over Glenview Park, Ont., in its hockey opener. Dan Deignan adds two goals with Tony Patterson, Joe Brewster, Bucky Wisner and Mike Roberson also scoring.

Champlain native and Plattsburgh State standout Tom Harrigan is named First Team All-SUNYAC in soccer.

 

Former Peru standout Jack Daly is named the offensive MVP at Deerfield Academy. He runs for 490 yards and six touchdowns and catches 17 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns. He also has a 101-yard kickoff return.

 

Mike Rider scores 19 points as Elizabethtown-Lewis repeats as champion of the Schroon Lake basketball tournament with a 49-47 win over Newcomb. Joel LaCourse scores 18 for the Huskies.

Dave Daniels repeats as winner of the Second Peru Turkey Trot, posting a time of 32:43 for the 10,000 meters. Kathy Brandell finishes 38th out of 148 runners with a 40:38 time.

 

Mark Drown scores 21 points and collects 18 rebounds in Clinton CC’s 74-70 win over Holyoke CC. Eric Caron chips in with 16 and John Denny adds 14.

Don Schryer scores 22 points while Scott LaTour, Kirk Charlton and Doug Proietti add 12 each to lead Crown Point to a 64-54 win over host Bolton in the tourney final.

John Covey scores 14 points, Andy Hastings adds 13 and Jeff Drollette chips in with 12 as Saranac defeats Dannemora 72-50. Mike Weaver leads the Knights with 21.

50 YEARS AGO (1969)

Former Peru standout Bob Finney and Mike Lee of Kirkwood are elected co-captains of the Syracuse freshman basketball team.

Bob Meconi scores 35 points to lead AuSable Forks to an 80-66 victory over Elizabethtown-Lewis. George Huttig nets 21 for the Lions.

John Drinkwine tallies 24 points to lead Willsboro past Lyon Mountain 82-81. Ray Petrashune scores 26 for the Miners.

Steve Boyer buckets 15 points to pace St. Joseph’s to a 61-41 victory over Mooers. Ron Rabideau nets 14 in a losing cause.

Former Dannemora star Tom Welch returns for his junior season at Siena College after averaging 16.1 points a game.

Substitute Gary Goff sinks 2 free throws to give Westport a 75-74 triumph over Elizabethtown-Lewis in the Mountain Valley League opener. Greg Redmond scores 24 for the Eagles while Rick Olcott leads the Lions with 26.

Pat Hogan hits for 25 and Steve Sweeney adds 23 as St. Pius makes its MVL debut with an 86-77 win over defending champ Schroon Lake. Pete Gath scores 22 for the Wildcats.

60 YEARS AGO (1959)

Gerry Hyland scores 28 points and Bob Way, 20, as the Peru town team overcomes Bob Kircheberger’s 39-point effort to beat Keeseville 85-82.

Steve Polino nets 20 as St. Mary’s wallops St. Ann’s of Swanton, Vt., 70-34.

Roger Jaquish gets 23 points in Willsboro’s 74-49 win over Hague. Gijanto scores 15 in a losing cause.

Pete Blackmore tallies 23 points to lead Elizabethtown to a 51-42 win over Mineville. Charlie Turek tosses in 16 for the Red Flame.

70 YEARS AGO (1949)

Plattsburgh High returns only two starters — captain Hal McCready and Paul Sharron — from its league championship team. Jim O’Connell, Dean Benson and Dave Failacci, all promoted from the JV late in 1948, are also back.

Jack Smith and Urgil Votraw rally St. John’s past Holy Ghost Academy 32-21. Chartier scores 13 for HGA.

St. Michael’s College, under first-year coach Barry Branon, tops the Champlain College Blue Jays 80-57. John Sheehan scores 17 and Al Baldassari, 14, for Champlain.

Frank Latourelle scores 19 points and George Maloney, 18, to lead the Keeseville Town Team past the Plattsburgh Genesees, 56-22. Ed Callanan and Lefty Wilson score 6 each for the Genesees.

80 YEARS AGO (1939)

Former St. John’s standouts Pepper Martin and Bob Duquette, and Charles Bennett, are added to the Plattsburgh Normal School roster.

Willis Wells says Lake Placid will try for a Pan-American Olympic Games in 1941 after the cancellation of the 1940 Winter Olympics due to the war in Europe.

The Wings score 36 points to lead the Dannemora Purple Raiders to a 58-39 win over Mooers in the Clinton County-Press Basketball League. Mousseau nets 17 for Mooers.
