LOOKING BACK (JULY 13-19)

10 YEARS AGO (2009)

National Guard pro Scott Martin of Clewiston, Fla., catches a final-round total of 10 bass weighing 36 pounds, 4 ounces to win $125,000 in the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Folgers on Lake Champlain.

Shawn Duquette of Morrisonville takes the lead for the first time on a lap 97 restart and outraces Tylor Terry to the stripe to win the Tri-State Sportsman 100 at Airborne Speedway. Former Daytona 500 champ Geoff Bodine comes in seventh.

Thierry Bonnabesse loses only 4 games in 5 matches to capture his fifth straight North Country Tennis Association men's singles championship. Ashley Abar wins 4 sets without losing a game in successfully defending her women's title.

Jarrod Peck runs for 82 yards and a touchdown while Brian Guiney gains 86 yards on the ground to lead the West to a 14-0 victory over the East in the 6th Annual Tupper Lake Rotary All-Star football game.

Casey Letourneau comes through as the designated hitter with 3 hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th, to help the Clinton County Mariners knock off the Tri-County Eagles in an American Legion District IV opener. 

Steve Burris hurls 4 strong innings with Tory Bouyea and Tom Jebb rapping out 3 hits apiece to lead the Champlain Valley Baseball League All-Stars to a 9-4 victory over the Green Mountain League Stars.

Junior Hilary Bemis, former standout at Crown Point, earns a spot on the North Atlantic Conference All-Star First Team. Bemis bats .350 while leading Castleton (Vt.) State in runs batted in (39) and homers (9). She also picks up 6 wins in the circle with a team-high 95 strikeouts.  

20 YEARS AGO (1999)

Matt Andrews scores to lift Chateaugay over previously unbeaten Chazy-Giroux's in North Country Soccer League play. Matt McArdle gets the shutout.

Samantha Blake, Keryn Castine and Crystal Passino of the Adirondack Lakes Pony Club qualify for the Eastern National Show Jumping Championships.

Ron Foster, Jeremy Calkins and Nick Weaver of Peru qualify for the National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships.

Former Peru softball star Kim Swarts is named the Mansfield University Spring Athlete of the Year after leading the team with 5 homers and 33 RBI.

25 YEARS AGO (1994)

The CVAC tennis all-stars are a family affair with Brian and Christine Murphy of Peru joining Bob, Tara and Erica Butler of Saranac on the first team.

Bruce Fry fires a 34-31—65 to set a course record at Adirondack Golf and Country Club.

Rob Bedard’s 2-run homer and Chris Breuder’s pitching lead D.A.R.E./McSweeney’s to an 8-4 upset of Post 20.

The Capitaland Thunder ruin the Plattsburgh North Stars’ season opener with a 29-15 victory at Bleecker Stadium in Albany. Eric Brumskill runs for one Stars’ score while Randy Brown passes to Ernie Follmer for the other TD.

30 YEARS AGO (1989)

Matt Mero and Rian McManus win Eastern Tennis Association Northern District age groups.

Ian Breen beats Rusty Bigelow on the second hole of sudden death to win the 9th-Annual Bill McBride Junior Golf Classic. Craig Joyce (17-18), Scott Cutaiar (15-16) and Matt Fredette (12-14) win net titles while Brian Norcross (15-16) and Matt Juneau (12-14) win in gross.

Todd Roenbeck of Columbus, Ohio is named athletic director at Clinton Community College.

40 YEARS AGO (1979)

Plattsburgh State’s Kevin Williams edges Dave Daniels in the Midnight Run while Gayle Giambruno and Elena Consoli finish 1-2 for the women.

Plattsburgh’s Susan Getman is the first female in the Rouses Point Freedom Run with Alix Heuston and Malone’s Mary Lou Cook rounding out the top three. Mike Mashtare of Albany is the overall winner with Brian Cavanagh and Keith Walsh claiming the next two spots.

Art Collins and Todd Wilkinson each get two hits as Post 20 rallies to beat Montreal North, 7-6, in the opening round of the Repentigny (Que.) International Midget Tournament.

Rich Dilzer wins the 100-meter freestyle and takes 3 seconds in the Lake Placid AAU Invitational Swim Meet.

Tommy Tallon and Art deGrandpre combine on a no-hitter while Matt Cleveland, Brian Bergevin and Chris Monette lead the attack as the Broad Street B grasshopper team rolls to victory.

Winning pitcher Billy Rankin raps 2 homers and Brian Rankin adds 2 hits as Beekmantown A edges South Plattsburgh 3-2. Scott and David Mooney each get 2 hits in a losing cause.

50 YEARS AGO (1969)

Dennis Trost wins the 7th-Annual Plattsburgh Soap Box Derby with Tom Barber runner-up for the second year in a row.

Cathy Kiroy rips 2 doubles and Debbie Trudeau and Chris Johnson chip in with triples as unbeaten Dannemora beats Rugar Street 8-7 in Senior League softball.

Terry LaTour pitches a one-hitter and goes 2-for-3 in East Morrisonville's win over Schuyler Falls in Babe Ruth baseball. Frank LeClair has 4 hits as Ellenburg downs Mooers.

60 YEARS AGO (1959)

Bobby LaMare pitches a 4-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Howard Crowley collects 3 hits, including a bases-loaded triple, as the Plattsburgh American Babe Ruth All-Stars beat Saratoga 5-1 in the sectionals. Amsterdam eliminates Plattsburgh the following day with a 5-1 win.

Dean Humphrey and Ron Rector lead the Pine Ridge Bowmen to a sweep of the actual and handicap scores in field archery competition in Willsboro.

Jeff Burns tosses a no-hitter for Ginsberg's, but loses 1-0 to Condo's when Bobby Grant walks and later scores on a passed ball.

70 YEARS AGO (1949)

Jack Noone goes 3-for-3 and Urgil Votraw homers in E.S. Mason's 8-1 win over Champlain in Junior Legion baseball. Bob Penfield pitches a 4-hitter.

Tubby Griffin pitches a 5-hitter and helps his cause with 3 hits as Morrisonville tops E.S. Mason 8-2.

Pickles Tolosky carries a no-hitter into the ninth inning before surrendering singles to Eccleston and Depake. The Lyon Mountain ace settles for a 2-hit shutout over Lake Placid.

80 YEARS AGO (1939)

Yankees' minor-league star Hank Borowy says he learned more about pitching from Saranac Lake Red Sox manager Doc Gautreau than he did at Fordham.
