PERU — Rylee Desso, a Peru gymnast, was awarded the 2019 Section VII Stacey Frechette Sportsmanship Award.

In honor of Stacey’s memory, each year Section VII honors one senior gymnast at the Section VII championship meet who through their actions both in and outside the gym has demonstrated the same qualities of sportsmanship that Stacey exhibited.

These qualities include competitiveness, leadership, fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility.

The individual receiving this award is annually selected by the Section VII gymnastics coaches and receives a plaque along with a monetary award and a bouquet of flowers to recognize their accomplishment.

The Stacey Frechette Scholarship Fund also recognizes a senior gymnast with the Stacey Frechette Scholarship, which is awarded annually to a senior gymnast who exhibits the character, hard work and determination that Stacey exhibited both in the classroom and in the gym.

In total the Stacey Frechette Scholarship Fund has awarded 22 scholarships totaling $33,500 along with 13 Sportsmanship Awards totaling $3,900 to area students-athletes since 2008 in Stacey's memory.
