Cardinal basketball

OSWEGO — The Cardinals started their SUNY Athletic Conference season on a positive note.

Plattsburgh State grabbed its fifth straight victory and second straight on the road by routing Oswego 83-61 in women’s basketball Friday.

“Huge win for us,” Cardinals coach Cheryl Cole said. “To win on the road was big.”

Plattsburgh outplayed the Lakers throughout the game, However, Oswego’s ability to get to the free-throw line kept the Lakers within reach.

“We got some careless turnovers midway in the first half that kept Oswego around,” Cole said. “We couldn’t really put them way until the end of the second half.”

The Cardinals were exceptional from the floor: 44.9 percent from field goal range and 32.1 percent from 3-point land.

They also did well on the defensive end, as they kept Oswego, a very strong 3-point shooting team, to 23.5 percent from behind the arc.

“We made it difficult for them to get any good open looks,” Cole said. “We defended the arc well.”

Kathleen Payne led Plattsburgh with 27 points to go along with three blocks and five rebounds. Payne has scored at least 20 points in three straight outings. Brittany Marshall also had a productive day for the Cardinals, finishing with 17 points, seven assists, one block and three steals.

But it was Devona Paul who dominated for Plattsburgh in her best game of the season thus far. Paul finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds to go along with three blocks and one assist.

“She just outworked people; she was just killing them,” Cole said. “What she brings every day, she is the hardest working person out there every time on the floor.”

Heather Herbert led Oswego with 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Peru native Mary Mazella finished with three points for the Lakers in 13 minutes of action.

The Cardinals are back on the court again today, as they head to Cortland to face the Red Dragons (5-2).
