PLATTSBURGH — Plattsburgh State had been perfect at home heading into Friday’s game against Cortland.

The Red Dragons though dominated play for much of the game and handed the Cardinals their first loss at Memorial Hall.

“First loss on your home floor hurts a bit but we need to get back there and play (today),” Plattsburgh coach Cheryl Cole said.

The Cardinals succumbed to Cortland’s aggressive zone defense and hot shooting touch, as it lost 78-51 in SUNYAC women’s basketball play.

With the loss the Cardinals drop to 16-5 on the season and 11-3 in conference play, while the Red Dragons (13-9, 9-6) achieve the series sweep over Plattsburgh.

“There are just some teams that we don’t match up well with,” Cole said. “We did not shoot well against their zone; they’re very good at what they do, the rotations in their zone are really different.”

It was a combination of Plattsburgh’s inability to get any offense going on one end and the Red Dragons sinking everything on the other.

Cortland shot 41.3 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from behind the arc. Three Red Dragon players made at least three 3-pointers in the contest.

“People hitting shots all over the place, we haven’t had a game played against us like that in awhile,” Cole said.

The Cardinals were down 43-29 at halftime, the only bright spot was Kathleen Payne’s stellar first half, with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Payne finished the contest with 21 points and 10 boards.

“KP played hard,” Cole said.

Cortland’s 78 points is the most the Cardinals have given up all season, while 51 points totals Plattsburgh’s second worst scoring performance of the year.

“I thought they had a little more energy,” Cole said. “We just couldn’t get stops (and) we couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

The Red Dragons were led by Megan Touhey and Grace Williamson who had 17 points, six rebounds and 18 points, seven rebounds, respectively.

“Hats off to them, they beat us bad,” Cole said. “A true testament of a good team is not defined by one game; we can’t carry (Friday’s) game into (today).”

Brittany Marshall added 10 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh will try and regroup today as it takes on Oswego at 2 p.m.
