PLATTSBURGH — It was the first time this season that the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team had the chance to face off against one of its State University of New York Athletic Conference opponents and they didn’t disappoint as the Cardinals downed Potsdam State 4-0 at Plattsburgh High Sunday afternoon.
It didn’t take long for the Cardinals (5-3, 1-0) to get on the board as Lindsey Bushey went unassisted in the eighth minute of the game and found the back of the net to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead.
After that, the game went to a standstill as the Cardinals missed on a few opportunities while the Bears (4-3-1, 0-1) were limited in their chances; they had just three shots on net in the first 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, however, the Cardinals’ offense exploded for three goals.
Head coach Tania Armellino said it was just a matter of sticking to their formation throughout the entire game.
“We held most of the possession in the first half. We were taking the shots, but they’re not falling,” Armellino said. “So, it’s understanding at halftime (that) they’ll come out just as hard (or) harder.
“They’ll know it’s only a one-goal difference. Can you switch the play to now become a little more productive? Let’s continue to make the shots, let’s continue to make the runs off the ball and wait, and it will come. And sure enough, it came soon after the start of the second (half).”
Just four minutes after intermission, Bushey was at it again as she went unassisted for her second goal of the game to give Plattsburgh State a 2-0 cushion over Potsdam.
From there, the Cardinals went on to find the back of the net twice more as Madeline Saccocio scored the first goal of her collegiate career to gain a 3-0 advantage with 30:34 remaining in the game, while Cassidy Clavet chipped in the fourth goal of the game with 18:57 remaining.
With their first SUNYAC victory behind them, the Cardinals have nearly a week off before hosting SUNY Cortland (2-5-1, 1-1-0) on Friday and Oswego State (4-4-1, 1-1-0) on Saturday.
Despite having two key conference matchups back-to-back, Armellino and the players are simply going to take it one game at a time.
“It’s the same as it’s been,” Armellino said. “It’s really going to be (about) knowing it’s game by game. Not looking to Saturday or beyond, (but) really looking at Friday (and) Cortland. What are we going to do? And how to but build off (Sunday).”
