It was a rough weekend for the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team.

After falling to No. 7 Rochester in the opening round of the Chuck Resler Tournament, the Cardinals fell in the consolation game Saturday, 78-67, to Ursinus College.

Plattsburgh (1-2) took a 37-33 into halftime, but shot a dismal 8-for-32 from the field in the second as the Bears roared ahead on 60.9 percent shooting.

"We just didn't shoot the ball well," Cardinals coach Tom Curle said. "We missed like six or seven free throws in the row. We just left so many points out there and we let them back in the game.

"We're not going to win a lot of games if we shoot that poorly. Guys that can make them weren't making them. It's all part of the learning experience of playing two days in a row. They played really hard against a physical team; they played tough defense on one end and then try to make a shot on the other. A lot just came down to how we shot the ball."

Preseason All-American Jon Ward supplied a game-high 23 points and five rebounds for Ursinus. Jesse Krasna and Pat Vasturia each added 13 points, while Krasna also pulled in six rebounds. The Bears outrebounded Plattsburgh, 44-33.

"Reggie (Williams) and Gary (Tibbs) each had four fouls," Curle said. "They got us in foul trouble and they outrebounded us. We have to get better rebounding out of some of the guys.

"When you shoot well you look good, and when you don't you look bad. We had a long stretch in the second half where we didn't score. We have a long way to go, but the more we play the more experience we get. We'll get a little better each game, and we learn something different with each contest too."

After a down game due to foul trouble against Rochester, John Perez broke out again to lead the way for the Cardinals with 17 points and 11 rebounds, the lone player in double figures for Plattsburgh.

Shevar Fields added nine points, while Ketema Brooks, Josh Bruno and Junghoon Roh had seven points apiece.

The Cardinals are off for Thanksgiving break, but will have their home opener on Nov. 29 against St. Lawrence at 8 p.m.

"We'll get back at it Monday and try to get better," Curle said.
