PLATTSBURGH — Brittany Marshall came through with perhaps her best performance of the season leading Plattsburgh State to a much-needed, 51-39, victory over Brockport in SUNYAC women’s basketball at Memorial Hall Friday night.

Marshall, who had been struggling of late with her shot, picked just the right time to rediscover her touch, leading the Cardinals to their sixth conference win of the season.

The sophomore standout from Malone was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-10 overall from the field, and finished with a game-high 23 points as Plattsburgh opened a critical season-ending five-game home stand with a solid win over the Golden Eagles.

“One down and four to go,” Plattsburgh coach Cheryl Cole said. “This was a big W for us. I thought we were focused, shared the ball well, made a few shots and set the tone with our defense early in the game.

“It was also nice to see Britt break out of a little shooting slump she’d been in. We need her to be productive to be successful, especially this time of the year and she was all that and then some for us tonight.”

As has been the norm through much of the second half of the regular season, the Cardinals came out strong. Plattsburgh shot the ball extremely well in the early stages of the contest, connecting on 5-of-11 shots from beyond the arc in the opening half. In addition to Marshall’s success from long range, Catherine Cassidy was also a perfect 2-for-2 from downtown to pace a Plattsburgh offensive attack that was efficient in the opening half as it has been for quite some time. The Cardinals shot over 45 percent from the field in the opening stanza and went into the break sporting a 34-19 advantage.

“We played very well in the first half,” Cole said. “We came out the way we wanted to, with a lot of energy but then, when we got up big, I thought, we got a little casual, gave up a few rebounds and actually got outworked.

“It wasn’t a perfect two halves of basketball but, our defense was solid throughout and that set the tone of things and was really the difference in the game.”

Trailing by as many 22 points early in the second half, Brockport continued to battle and threatened to make a game of it over the final 10 minutes of play.

Cecilia Sigrist, who had an outstanding all-around game, ignited the rally with 11 of her team-high 20 points in the second half of play. Sigrist also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles (6-16, 3-12 SUNYAC).

The Cardinals were able to regroup in time to stave off the rally, made several key stops on defense and coasted over the final minutes to a solid double-digit win.

Plattsburgh (10-11, 6-8 SUNYAC) now moves on to host Geneseo this afternoon. The Cardinals and Blue Knights are scheduled to tip off at Memorial Hall at 2 p.m.
