PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh Thunderbirds’ power was on full display Monday at Chip Cummings Field.
Johann Paniagua, Taylor Olmstead and Simon Palenchar all blasted homers to pace the Thunderbirds (18-9) to a 7-5 win against the Puerto Rico Islanders (16-12) in an Empire Pro Baseball League game.
Paniagua also notched a double, scored two runs and registered one RBI, while Olmstead scored twice and drove in two runs.
Drake Sykes pitched 1.2 innings of relief and wiggled out of trouble in both the eighth and ninth innings to record the save.
Sykes induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game and allowed Plattsburgh to take a breath after some stressful moments in the final inning.
Cas Silber picked up the win, fanning six in 7.1 innings of work and giving up three earned runs on six hits and four walks.
The Thunderbirds came from behind in the game after Puerto Rico took a 2-0 lead in the third frame after an E6 allowed Angel Perez to score and Angel Garced tallied a run-scoring single.
Alexander Martinez had two singles to finish with the most base knocks in the Islanders’ lineup, and Jacob Bissell blasted a solo homer to lead off the eighth inning.
Plattsburgh took control of the matchup with a four-run sixth, highlighted by a solo shot by Paniagua and a two-run bomb from Olmstead.
Logan Maxwell suffered the loss for Puerto Rico, allowing six earned runs on six hits and two walks.
The Thunderbirds and Islanders play at 4 p.m. today at Chip Cummings Field.
