Errors sink Jr. Mariners in 5-3 loss

PLATTSBURGH — The Colchester Cannons scored the game’s first five runs and held off a late rally to defeat the Clinton County Junior Mariners, 5-3, Wednesday at Lefty Wilson Field.

Colchester took advantage of three Mariners errors in the opening frame to tally twice, then scored three more times in the third inning courtesy of three more errors.

The Mariners (17-9) scored twice in the fourth, when Ian McCasland walked and Cody Lambert followed with a run-scoring triple.

Lambert later scored on an error.

In the fifth inning, John Laporte singled and scored on McCasland’s RBI double.

The Mariners loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but the Cannons turned a 5-2-3 double play to end the game.

Zach Rainville suffered the loss, allowing five runs — two earned — in three innings.

McCasland hurled three scoreless innings, and Laporte tossed a scoreless seventh.

The Mariners are back in action this weekend at the Adirondack Lightning Showcase.
