PLATTSBURGH — The 4th Ward Cardinals captured their fifth Champlain Valley Baseball League championship in six years with a two-game sweep of the Lyon Mountain Miners Sunday at Lefty Wilson Field.
The Cardinals earned 6-2 and 3-2 victories to record the organization’s 14th league title.
“Strong pitching and defense won us the series,” 4th Ward manager Kyle Erickson said. “Eric Rock continued the momentum from Game 1, and Ryan Whalen pitched a gutsy relief performance.
“Both teams battled until the final pitch, and it was a great ending to another great season.”
The Cardinals strung together four runs before the Miners could cross home plate.
Lyon Mountain was held scoreless until the fifth inning, where it added a pair of runs but was unable to break even or pull ahead.
4th Ward added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to increase its lead to 6-2.
Cardinals relief pitcher Eric Rock went 2 1/3 innings without surrendering a hit to keep the Miners at bay.
Rock had three hits, and CJ Worley, Joe Tolosky and Tom Bowe each contributed two hits apiece.
