Paying Respects

U.S. Army Ranger veteran Carl Benware organizes the cleaning and restoration of tombstones and grave plaques at different area cemeteries each Memorial Day, with help from local volunteers. This year, he and a number of helpers were at work at Mount Carmel Cemetery in the City of Plattsburgh. Here, he is shown with (from left) Brock Benware, 6; Louisa Archer, 9; Ada Ross, 8; and Myra Ross, 4, whose mothers heard about the effort and wanted to get involved. Benware takes great pride in teaching children about paying homage to and respecting the people buried in local cemeteries. He said that once a cemetery is cleaned, he finds a local group to carry on with the annual cleanup.
