SCHROON LAKE — One person was in critical condition Monday after two boats crashed into each other on Schroon Lake Sunday night.

Both boats were running without driving lights just before 11 p.m., Schroon Lake-based State Police reported, when the collision occurred.

A Boston Whaler craft operated by Gerald A. Smith, 17, Schroon Lake turned in front of a Hydrostream Vector boat operated by Brett D. Bernhard, 20, of Horicon, striking the Hydrostream on the passenger side, police said.

A passenger on the Hydrostream, Daniel G. Miller, 20, of Horicon was hit in the head during the collision and knocked unconscious.

Bernhard managed to get the boat to Schroon Lake Marina and call 911 to get help.

Schroon Lake Ambulance took Miller to Moses-Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga. He was then transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with a severe head injury.

The hospital listed Miller in critical condition Monday.

The Whaler capsized on the lake after the collision, Trooper Luke Beadnell said, and Smith and a passenger, Michael Gallagher, 17, of Schroon Lake, swam to shore.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was involved, and tickets are pending.

Trooper Benjamin Davis is in charge of the investigation.

Police said Miller was the only one injured in the crash. Both boats have been impounded by State Police.
