PLATTSBURGH — The next Discover Plattsburgh event aims to bring help to many organizations in and around the city.

"There are a lot of organizations that have a lot of need," city Promotions and Events Coordinator Sandra Geddes said.

"They need volunteers; they don't have funds to pay people."

Discover Service is set for 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 11, at the City Recreation Center.

The organizations taking part — 21 as of Wednesday — are looking for volunteers for specific jobs, ongoing service or the need is project-based, Geddes said.

The city will be among the groups tabling at the event, with certain activities in mind.

"The Fourth of July (celebration), Mayor's Cup, Battle of Plattsburgh," Geddes said. "We need lots of volunteers."

She is encouraging high-school and college students to come to Discover Service, and adult volunteers are definitely welcome, too.

"It's a great way to meet people," Geddes said, "to be social, exercise ..."

Discover Service is held during National Volunteer Recognition Week which is April 10 through 16, the release said.

"This event will help identify not only the volunteer needs in our region, but also engage community members by showcasing the numerous service activities available," she said.

Everyone is welcome to come peruse the information available at the event, whether they are looking for a volunteer opportunity or just want to know more about the groups taking part.

And newcomers can reach out to Geddes even the morning of the event to take part.

"We've got plenty of room," she said, "but if they tell me sooner, I can promote them."

The city will provide tables and chairs, she said.

Discover Service is the third event to fall under the city umbrella of Discover Plattsburgh.

South Side Sled and Skate kicked off the program devised to bring folks together; next, in March, came the ADK Hard Cider Irish Festival in March.

Those, along with Discover Service, were new events.

Locals will recognize some traditional activities among those coming up: the Fourth of July celebration, followed in September by the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration and then the Rockeater Adventure Race later in the fall.

A big hit from last Christmas season will be back as 2016's final Discover Plattsburgh event — the Downtown Plattsburgh Holiday Parade.
