TUPPER LAKE -- Two motorcyclists were killed when they were hit by a pickup truck Sunday afternoon.

State Police based in Ray Brook said Edward J. Schmieder, 44, of Attica was driving a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup truck on Route 30 about a mile south of the Village of Tupper Lake, pulling a boat on a trailer.

Around 12:30 p.m., his truck crossed into the northbound lane, striking the last three motorcyclists in a group of nine that was passing by, State Police said.

Steven R. Markham, 51, and Sandra H. Markham, 49, both of Locke, were killed.

Another motorcyclist, David R. Markham, 46, of Auburn, was hurt. He was treated at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, but his condition was not released.

Schmieder was airlifted to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with head injuries. He was in fair condition Monday evening.

Autopsies on the Markhams were scheduled for Monday but results were not available that evening.

State Police were unable to say how the Markhams were related.

Troopers were still investigating the cause of the accident Monday.
