PLATTSBURGH -- As part of Operation Air Brake, State Police found numerous flawed brake systems in commercial vehicles traveling locally.

The special road checks were held on Interstate 87 in the southbound Valcour rest area and the northbound High Peaks rest area in the Town of North Hudson, along with at the Ogdensburg Port of Entry. Officials said by-pass enforcement was also held on state roadways in Plattsburgh, Peru and North Hudson.

State Police said this year's checks emphasized the inspection of commercial motor vehicle braking systems and their components.

During the checks, officials performed 106 inspections, thoroughly examining the trucks' mechanical braking components and condition.

Police placed 18 vehicles -- about 17 percent of vehicles inspected -- out of service.

Troopers inspected a total of 952 individual brakes on the commercial vehicles and issued 33 traffic tickets for violations.

Officials said troopers assigned to local barracks issued nine traffic tickets for by-pass and drive-by violations on Interstate 87 and on roads in Peru, Plattsburgh and North Hudson.

State Police have participated in the international commercial vehicle road check, sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, for several years.
