Each spring, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Northern New York holds a series of Northern New York Spring Beef Week meetings to keep area beef producers up to date on the latest and best management practices.
Spring and Fall Beef Week meetings provide a place for beef producers in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties to network and share ideas.
Northern New York Livestock Educator Betsy Hodge said that beef cattle are popular on North Country farms, often replacing dairy cattle on smaller farms. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, 14,200 beef cows were being raised on farms in the six northernmost counties of New York state in 2012.
The 2013 Spring Beef Week programs include presentations by New York Beef Industry Council Executive Director Carol Gillis and Cornell University Beef Extension Specialist Dr. Mike Baker.
She will talk about innovative ways to market beef products during times of tight supply and high prices. She will present information on new cuts of beef and how to price beef products to increase sales.
Gillis will also visit meat processors and sale barns as she travels around the region.
Baker will provide attendees with tips on how to select the right bulls to build a farm enterprise that produces quality beef to meet marketplace demand. He will be available for farm visits across the six counties. Those interested in having him visit may contact the local Cooperative Extension office for details.
