Signs protect endangered species, too

ALBANY — "No Trespassing" signs posted near National Grid power-line rights-of-way don't just help keep the public safe and protect the utility networks, they are there to protect endangered species and other wildlife that make their home in these corridors.

Among them, said a National Grid press release, are the karner blue butterfly and the frosted elfin butterfly. These federal and state protected butterflies feed on the low-growing wild blue lupine plant that favors open areas such as utility corridors. National Grid is increasing security in those areas where public trespassing has been a concern.

Unauthorized access to these areas for recreational uses or dumping of lawn and other waste is prohibited and can cause damage to these sensitive habitats.

National Grid access roads along rights-of-way exist for the purpose of maintaining and repairing the electric and natural gas systems in the region, the release said, for use by authorized personnel only.
