Passage Closed

SARANAC LAKE — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is notifying the public of construction on the Spider Creek culvert that provides waterway passage between Follensby Clear Pond and Fish Creek Pond in the Saranac Lake Wild Forest.

Beginning mid-August 2019, the New York State Department of Transportation will replace the culvert on Route 30 at Spider Creek, a popular route for paddlers.

During construction, paddlers will not be able to pass through the culvert. The culvert will be closed through November.

A temporary carry to bypass the culvert will be established, but paddlers should consider using alternate canoe routes that avoid the use of the Spider Creek culvert entirely.

Parking will be available at the nearby water access site, but the northern entrance will be blocked. The parking area may be congested on holiday and weekends.

For information on alternate paddling routes, visit the DEC website.

State Library money awarded

PLATTSBURGH — State funding has been secured for four projects at local libraries.

The funding includes $32,642 for Chazy Public Library, and $16,590 for Dannemora Free Library for exterior renovations, and $190,204 for Goff Nelson Public Library in Tupper Lake to install a new heating and air conditioning system.

Additionally, Clinton-Essex-Franklin Library System headquarters in Plattsburgh will receive $19,705 to upgrade their driveway.

The money comes from the state Department of Education.

"Public libraries not only provide access to books, online resources and vital services like classes and job search assistance, but they also help shape our lives,” State Assemblyman Billy Jones (D-Chateaugay) said.

"Libraries foster a love of reading and learning at a young age, and continue to support residents of all ages. This funding will help fuel these critical community resources for years to come."
