A sex offender in Malone recently charged with failing to update his address has been arrested — along with his wife — in connection with an burglary in Westville early this year.

James M. Buckson, 32, of Malone was already in custody at the Franklin County Jail when he was charged at 9:44 a.m. Monday with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, according to Malone-based State Police.

Buckson has been held at the jail since May 18, when he was charged with a felony for failing to register as a sex offender, police and jail personnel said.

That charge alleges that Buckson, a level 2 sex offender, moved from a residence on Route 37 in Fort Covington to the Gateway Motel in Malone earlier this year and did not update authorities of his new address within the required 10-day window.

In 2005, Buckson was convicted of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl for whom he had been a babysitter. He was sentenced to six years of probation and a $500 fine, according to the state's Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry.

In 2001, Buckson was convicted of fourth-degree grand larceny and was sentenced to one and a half to three years in prison, according to state Department of Correctional Services records.

On Saturday, Buckson's wife, Savanna, 25, was taken into custody and charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Both Bucksons are accused of breaking into a seasonal residence in Westville and stealing cash, a television and numerous additional items, which was reported to State Police Jan. 18.

The couple was still being held at the jail Wednesday night, with bail for James Buckson set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond and Savanna Buckson, $5,000 cash and $10,000 bond.

Each of the accused is scheduled to reappear in court at a later date.
