ELLENBURG DEPOT -- A local baby is hospitalized with serious injuries, and her father is behind bars, accused of assaulting her.

Seven-week-old Jasmine Lagoy was taken to CVPH Medical Center with several injuries Saturday evening. Later that night, her father, Byron Lagoy of Ellenburg Depot, was charged with second-degree assault for allegedly injuring the young girl.

The infant was later transferred to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Hospital officials said Tuesday afternoon they were unable to release any information about her condition.

State Police Troop B Bureau of Criminal Investigation Capt. Robert LaFountain said the child sustained multiple serious injuries but was expected to survive.

Her 23-year-old father was later arraigned on the charge in Beekmantown Town Court and sent to the Clinton County Jail on $10,000 cash bail.

As the investigation continued Tuesday afternoon, jail officials said Lagoy was still behind bars, unable to post bail.

He is expected to return to court at a later date to face the charge.

State Police have declined to comment on the extent of the assault or the child's injuries.

The suspect's grandmother, Priscilla Lagoy, said she was shocked to hear about the assault and her grandson's arrest. She said late Tuesday afternoon that she was unsure whether the infant had improved from critical condition.

State Police said the Department of Social Services is now handling the child's custody.

No additional information about the arrest or Lagoy's condition was available.
