MALONE -- Thirteen of the 38 people arrested on charges involving schemes to acquire prescriptions through Franklin County-funded Medicaid for illegal sale recently appeared in court.

All were arrested by the Franklin County Narcotic and Border Protection Task Force on May 8 during a 6 a.m. sweep.

At least five of the people charged and maybe more were earning enough from the illegal-drug sales to make a living, District Attorney Derek Champagne said at the time.

They obtained the drugs by exaggerating symptoms to doctors, faking automobile-accident injuries, coaching each other to gain more-potent prescriptions from physicians and lying -- saying they had lost a prescription and needed a replacement, only to have it filled at a different pharmacy.

The main drugs trafficked were Oxycontin and hydrocodone, powerful pain relievers known as synthetic cocaine because of the effects they produce and their addictive nature.

Other drugs obtained include methadone and marijuana.
