PLATTSBURGH — The state's DEC will launch lifeguard sessions later this month to get New Yorkers qualified for its seasonal positions.

The summertime jobs will be available at a range of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation campgrounds throughout the Adirondack and Catskill parks. 

To get qualified, the DEC will host its free, annual qualifying procedures, starting on Friday, Feb. 21 in the Town of Amsterdam. 

Other sessions will be held at various locations throughout the state until Saturday, June 20. 

"New Yorkers who love the outdoors and are looking for summer employment are encouraged to register for these free sessions," a DEC news release says. 

ELIGIBILITY

The hourly rate for the seasonal lifeguard positions is $14.66 and, the release adds, most facilities offer free housing.

To be eligible for those jobs, at the time of employment a candidate must:

• Be at least 16 years old. 

• Possess a valid certification in Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider or BLS and First Aid. 

• Have successfully completed the New York State DEC lifeguard qualifying procedure. 

• Have submitted a current DEC medical form stating the candidate's physical ability to perform lifeguard duties. 

• Have met the vision requirement of 20/70 uncorrected in both eyes and be correctable to the 20/40 standard. Candidates tested at a vision level below 20/40 in either one or both eyes must correct to a minimum of 20/40 with 20/20 preferred. 

• Have completed a personal interview with the DEC. 

• Have attended a DEC lifeguard orientation. 

THE SESSIONS

Per the release, the DEC's qualifying procedure sessions will include an in-water demonstration of lifesaving techniques and performance of Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR, skills.

The 2020 dates and locations include: 

• Friday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at Lynch Literacy Academy at 55 Brandt Place in the Town of Amsterdam. 

• Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m. at Gloversville Middle School at 234 Lincoln Street in the City of Gloversville. 

• Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. at Catskill Recreation Center at 651 County Highway 38 in the Hamlet of Arkville. 

• Saturday, March 21 at 9 a.m. at Glens Falls High School at 15 Quade Street in the City of Glens Falls. 

• Sunday, March 22 at 9 a.m. in the Saunders Sports Complex of Paul Smiths College at 7777 Route 30 in the Hamlet of Paul Smiths. 

• Saturday, April 4 at 9 a.m. at Moriah Central School at 39 Viking Lane in the Hamlet of Port Henry. 

• Friday, April 17 at 4 p.m. at Catskill Recreation Center at 651 County Highway 38 in the Hamlet of Arkville. 

• Saturday, April 18 at 9 a.m. at Gloversville Middle School at 234 Lincoln Street in the City of Gloversville.

• Saturday, April 25 at 9 a.m. at Lynch Literacy Academy at 55 Brandt Place in the Town of Amsterdam.

• Sunday, April 26 at 9 a.m. at Kingston High School at 403 Broadway in the City of Kingston. 

• Saturday, May 2 at 9 a.m. at South Lewis Central School at 4264 East Road in the Town of Turin. 

• Saturday, May 30 at 9 a.m. at Queensbury Elementary School at 431 Aviation Road in the Town of Queensbury. 

• Saturday, June 6 at 9 a.m. at Lynch Literacy Academy at 55 Brandt Place in the Town of Amsterdam.

• Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m. at Kingston High School at 403 Broadway in the City of Kingston.

• Sunday, June 14 at 9 a.m. in the Saunders Sports Complex of Paul Smiths College at 7777 Route 30 in the Hamlet of Paul Smiths.

• Saturday, June 20 4 p.m. at Catskill Recreation Center at 651 County Highway 38 in the Hamlet of Arkville.

WHAT TO BRING

The DEC news release says qualifying procedures will begin on time and late arrivals will not be accepted; candidates will be given a 15-minute warm-up period.

"Candidates must bring photo identification, current certifications — if available — and their own CPR mask," the release adds.
