UTICA -- The Plattsburgh State men's baseball team qualified for the State University of New York Athletic Conference Tournament with Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Oswego.

Sunday, the Cardinals continued to build some momentum for the playoffs with a 9-1 and 13-5 twinbill sweep of SUNYIT.

Plattsburgh State (23-11, 9-5 SUNYAC) finished tied for second with Brockport, but the Golden Eagles won the tie-breaker for the second seed in the tournament due to two their wins over top-seeded Cortland.

"We knew that if we won the first game, we would be the third seed no matter what," said Plattsburgh State head coach Kris Doorey. "Once we got the first game out of the way, we played some of our other guys in the second game.

"We've been working hard lately and playing under some stress. So the second game was more of a fun game for us. The win we had against Cortland (on Thursday) kind of relaxed us, and we played good baseball this weekend."

The double-elimination SUNYAC Tournament will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Cortland. The Cardinals play Brockport at 10 a.m. on Friday. If they win, they don't play again until Saturday. If they lose, they play at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Kevin Gent went eight innings for the victory in Game 1, as he scattered seven hits, walked one and allowed only an eighth-inning run.

"We talked with Kevin about his mechanics from last year and opposed to the last couple of weeks," Doorey said. "We talked to him about keeping his elbow up.

"He has been struggling with the strike zone lately but walked only one guy today, and that came in the eighth inning. He pitched a Kevin Gent-type game today and did a great job."

Matt Dahlin rapped three hits while Paul Strang and John Campbell added two hits each for the Cardinals. Dahlin drove in three runs and Campbell and Todd Hughes knocked in two apiece.

Jason Vick accounted for three hits for the Wildcats, and Ian Hobbs had two.

In Game 2, Joey Painter picked up the victory in relief as the Cardinals, leading 4-3 after three, broke it open with seven runs in the fourth.

Strang and Zack Welch led Plattsburgh State with two hits apiece, with Strang driving in three runs. Getting two RBI each were John Coleman and Jared Jarvis.

The Cardinals used 17 players in the contest, with 11 of them getting hits. Nine players finished with hits for SUNYIT (5-22, 1-13).

"It was questionable that we would play the games today because of the weather," Doorey said. "The outfield was soaked because of the rain. SUNYIT did a great job to get the games in.

"We tried to be safe because of the conditions and gave some of our players some rest."

Plattsburgh State has a nonconference twinbill scheduled for today at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's College.
