The Plattsburgh State campus was recently paid a visit by not one but five famous pop stars.

The U.K. boy band One Direction, who sky-rocketed to fame there after being finalists on the seventh season of the U.K.'s "The X Factor" last year, made a short stop at Plattsburgh State to shoot scenes for their music video "Got to Be You."

"They're as big as it gets in the U.K. right now," said Bryce Hoffman, executive director of marketing and communication at the college.

Hoffman said the college received a request from the band's camp to shoot on the campus, and after checking to make sure the group was legitimate and wouldn't reflect negatively on the college's image, decided to give it a go.

A member of the band's video crew had apparently spent time on the campus, according to Hoffman, and suggested it as the location for the shoot.

"It fit in with what they wanted to do with the video," Hoffman said.

'PURE EAR CANDY'

The band, whose members include, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, shot footage near Feinberg Library, Hawkins Pond, outside Champlain Valley Hall and in a model dorm room, used by the Admission's Office, in Macomb Hall.

Hoffman said the premise of the "Got to Be You" video is that the band is at college, getting ready to leave for winter break.

"This stuff is just pure ear candy," he said of the song.

Michelle Ouellette, director of public relations and publications at Plattsburgh State, said the college did its best not to draw attention to the band's presence on campus.

"They were wanting to be a little bit quiet about their efforts on campus, and we were also trying to honor that," she said.

'ACCENT FAN'

Still, the U.K. singing sensations, who are signed with Simon Cowell's record label, Sysco, did not go unnoticed at Plattsburgh State.

"I was so excited that One Direction was actually on my campus, so I went and got construction paper and a marker, and I made signs at the different filming locations," said Plattsburgh State freshman Abigayle Ploetz, from Eden.

Ploetz, who heard the band was at the college through Facebook, said in an email interview that she was first introduced to One Direction's music over the summer on another social networking site, Tumblr.

"I really like One Direction because they have gorgeous voices, and (from) the lyrics, it's kind of obvious that they were trying to appeal to teenage girls, and they do," Ploetz said.

"I'm also an accent fan, so the fact that they're British definitely adds to the appeal for me."

NEW AUDIENCE

Ploetz and a group of other students who gathered around one of the filming sites got to hear those accents when the band came over to greet them.

"What really made an impression on me was how nice they were," Ploetz said. "They stayed and talked and signed things."

Hoffman said the band members were extremely respectful of the fact that classes and college affairs were going on in the midst of their filming and agreed to make a gift to the college in exchange for using the locations.

"Got to Be You" will be One Direction's second single. Their first, "What Makes You Beautiful," debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. charts in September.

Hoffman said having Plattsburgh State featured in the video will expose the campus to a whole new audience of people that otherwise might never have seen it.

"This music video is going to attract attention worldwide," he said.
