PLATTSBURGH — Local seniors can increase their intake of fresh produce with Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons offered through local aging offices.

“The purpose of the program is to promote improved nutrition through increased consumption of locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables for seniors age 60 and over,” Katie Moore, account-clerk typist for the Clinton County Office for the Aging, said.

“They can just stop in the the office, and there is also an income eligibility, too.”

The maximum gross monthly income for one person is $1,926; two people $2,607; and three people, $3,289.

“They do have to fill out a form,” she said.

“It's just basic information their name, address and phone number.”

The agency has 800 booklets to distribute for the season.

“There are five coupons in a booklet, and they are $4 each so a total of $20,” Moore said.

Each senior can receive one booklet, which can be used at the Plattsburgh Farmers' and Crafters' Market, the Rouses Point Farmers Market, Pray's Family Farm Stand in Keeseville, Northern Orchard Farm Stand in Peru, and Shields Vegetable Farm Stand in Plattsburgh.

“We cannot issue them after September 30,” Moore said.

“It is put on by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets.”

RAVE REVIEWS

In Essex County, 580 booklets will be distributed to income-eligible seniors 60 and over.

“As of today we have distributed about 100 booklets,” Krissy Leerkes, acting director of the Essex County Office for the Aging, said.

“Older adults responded to this program in a great way. They loved going to the Farmers Market, being able to pick out their locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables but also to support their local farmers because it makes a huge impact for our local farmers as well.”

Essex County seniors can cash in their coupons at any participating Farmers Market including Elizabethtown, Willsboro, Keene, Ticonderoga and Lake Placid.

"And, there are various farm stands that also participate,” Leerkes said.
