CHAZY — “Gardening & Story Time” is a win-win for children and their parents Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m., at the Chazy Public Library located at 1329 Fiske Rd.
Library director Blake Andrew has partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers to present a fun, educational opportunity to encourage the next generation of gardeners.
“We feel it is important to introduce children to techniques of gardening,” Andrew said.
“Some of our Friends of the Library are master gardeners, so they proposed an event of this nature.”
The library recently created two raised-garden beds in its outdoor space.
“To kind of inaugurate them and plant them, we decided to have something where we would invite local kids and make an event of it,” he said.
On Saturday, children will be given plastic buckets to establish their own very own bucket garden they can haul away to home.
They will plant tomatoes, peppers and greens.
“It could be a lettuce,” he said.
“It could be a spinach. That is being provided by the master gardeners.
“The plan is that we will take care of it for the summer, and then when it's ready to harvest we will give it away to our patrons at the library in the fall.”
The produce will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis during the library's regular hours.
“This is our first year doing it,” Andrew said.
“It's kind of trial by error, but I expect that it will be a fun event for the kids and the adults as well.”
A garden-themed Story Time will be held inside the library.
Space is limited.
