Firefighers check on hoses as they assist multiple departments in fighting a blaze that broke out in a woodshed and spread to a garage Friday afternoon at 25 Saw Mill Way in Schuyler Falls.

SCHUYLER FALLS — Firefighters responded to a structure fire that engulfed a couple’s woodshed and garage at 25 Saw Mill Way here Friday afternoon.

Clinton County Dispatch put out a call for the fire at 4:11 p.m. with Morrsionville Volunteer Fire Department responding.

SEVEN DEPARTMENTS

Morrisonville Fire Chief Shawn Favreau said the initial response to the blaze was slow due to the time of the fire call matching up with the near end of the workday.

Favreau said he called in two extra engines and received assistance from a tanker task force, which helped douse the flames with up to 21,000 gallons of water.

Mutual aid was provided by departments from Cadyville, Peru, Plattsburgh District 3, Keeseville, South Plattsburgh and Dannemora .

HOME UNTOUCHED

“Once we arrived on scene, the flames were going pretty good,” Favreau said. “The garage was a total loss when we got there.”

The fire is believed to have started in the woodshed and spread to the garage as a result of the wind.

The couple was home during the incident and called for emergency responders. Their home was untouched by the flames.

“The fire melted the snow off their roof and that’s about it,” Favreau said.

It is speculated that the blaze was caused by an outside wood boiler.

However, the cause is still under investigation.

‘BE CAREFUL’

Favreau encourages the public to be cautious during the winter, which is when most structure fires occur.

“Be careful with woodstoves and heating devices and make sure to keep flammable materials away from them,” he said.
