Police: Man bit trooper

SCHROON LAKE — A man State Police say bit the leg of a trooper remained in Essex County Jail on Tuesday.

Troopers were responding to a domestic complaint in Schroon Lake on Saturday night when Raymond Smith, 47, resorted to using his teeth as he resisted efforts to take him into custody, officials said.

The injury was not serious, police said, but landed Smith with a felony assault charge, specifically intent to cause injury to police, firefighters or emergency medical technicians. He will also answer to charges of resisting arrest, criminal mischief and obstructing governmental administration.

He did not post bail, which was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. Smith was set to appear in Town of Schroon Court 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The name of the trooper wasn’t available on Tuesday.
