Press-Republican

---- — CADYVILLE — Ann Louise Downs, 85, of the Downs Road, Cadyville, joined her loving husband Hubert, Tuesday, April 30, 2013 from the CVPH Medical Center, with her loving family by her side. She joined him just days after what would have been their 61 wedding anniversary.

She was born in Flint, Mich., Dec. 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Willard and Grace (Mitchell) Smith. She grew up in Champlain and graduated from Champlain High School in 1944.

Ann worked for Sheridan Iron Works in Champlain for several years. After marrying Hubert, April 26, 1952, they began raising their family of 9 children. She began working as a nurses aide for CVPH Medical Center, and later privately on her own in many homes.

Among "Mom's" many interests, she enjoyed reading, knitting, camping, and caring for others, but her true love was spending time with her family. Camping is a family passion and there will always be a special spot at the Papa fire. She took great joy in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow and flourish.

Survivors include her children and children-in-law, Gary and June Downs of Rexford, Barbara and Frank LeClair of Cadyville, John and Norma Downs of Champlain, Bill and Roxanne Downs of Mooers Forks, Peggy and Danny Guynup of Cadyville, Ray and Carol Downs of Whitehall, Jan Downs of Peru, Mary Lou and Peter Duquette of Cadyville, Bett and Bernie Bassett of Morrisonville; 19 grandchildren, Benjamin Downs, Rebecca Santos, Kelley LeClair, Shawn Downs, John Downs, Laurie Thibodeau, Dannielle Downs, Courtney Lamberton, Nathan Guynup, Christopher Guynup, Elissa Duso, Dennis and Darrin Downs, Matthew Moore, Lindsey Downie, Logan Duquette, Angel Morgan, Jess Allen and Adam Bassett; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Robert Bill Smith of Plattsburgh, James Carl and Sally Smith of Rouses Point, Gladys Vaillaincourt of Hemmingford, Quebec, and Marion LaPan of Altona; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Marion Downs of Plattsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was predeceased by her husband, Hubert Downs, April 13, 2000; her parents; brother, Harvey Smith; and sister, Fannie Rabideau.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. Friday, May 3, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M.
