Downtown Association map nears completion

PLATTSBURGH — More than 30 businesses will be included on a guide/map of downtown Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh Downtown Association President Colin Read said the glossy, tri-fold pamphlets could be ready before the end of February.

The businesses will be pinpointed on a caricature-style map on the front side of the handout. A more geographically accurate map and listing of businesses and attractions is planned for the back.

The pamphlets are the creation of graphic designer and illustrator Jodi Brunner. The association plans to print an initial run of 5,000.

At a recent association meeting, Steve Brodi of Bridge Street Auction Service suggested they look into creating an app for the information on the pamphlet. They could put a QR code to link to the app on the pamphlets, he said.

Deena McCullough of Northern Insuring said it would be a good idea for the Downtown Association to join the North Country Chamber of Commerce. That could also help with spreading the word about the smaller organization’s efforts, she said.

Joanne Knowlton, a North Country Cultural Center for the Arts Board of Directors member, presented details of the upcoming Oscar Eve Party at the Strand Theatre. The event is scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m. March 1, the day before the Academy Awards.

Tickets are $20. Each ticket features space to pick the winners of Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Those who pick all five correctly will be entered into a drawing to be held March 3. That winner will receive two tickets to every event presented by the Strand in 2014.

Knowlton said the evening would include light refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, Academy Award trivia, film clips and other raffles and prizes.

All proceeds will go toward programming and events at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts.
