---- — WATERTOWN — Champlain native Steven Carder poured in 38 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as North Country Community College held off Jefferson Community College, 77-70, in men’s college basketball.
The Saints improved their record to 7-1 on the season, 5-1 in the region.
“Carder was a stud tonight,” North Country coach Chad LaDue said. “His maturity is showing and there is no doubt that he is one of the best in the region.”
North Country came out to a rocky start allowing Jefferson to take a 12-0 lead early in the first half. At the midway point of the first the lead would be cut to seven and by the end of the half the Saints had a commanding 11-point lead.
Michael Boyea was able to chip in 10 points and nine assists for North Country, while Brody Douglass added eight points and Steven Poulter contributed nine points and grabbed nine rebounds with some key rebounds coming in the second half.
“Boyea really stepped up and had his best game as a Saint,” LaDue said. “He did a nice job of being our leader on the floor.”
Devin Mills and Ian Henderson each had a 3-pointer off the bench, and both of them came at the exact moment the Saints needed them with their lead dwindling down to one.
“Whether you play three minutes or 40, everybody is a valuable asset to the team,” LaDue said. “They work hard and play the game the right way.”
Jefferson’s top producers were Derrick Williams and Ryan Tomlin who each had 18 points, and Denzell Davis who put 14 on the board.
The Saints will play Adirondack Community College at home Saturday at 1 p.m.
