MALONE — An estimated $2 million project will convert the Super 8 Motel into a Red Roof Inn and Suites and add 18 rooms.
Super 8 is closing on April 24, and the site will be operating as a Red Roof Inn by April 25, said owner John Parent.
The Finney Boulevard property will go from 44 rooms to 62, with the new suites built as a tower with an elevator.
Between two and five new employees will likely be hired in the Housekeeping Department as the new rooms come online, Parent said.
“This is absolutely wonderful,” said Hugh Hill, executive director of the Greater Malone Chamber of Commerce, of which Super 8 is a member.
“Red Roof Inn is well known by both American and Canadian travelers, and I congratulate John Parent,” he said.
“The Super 8 did well, but I expect it will do even better because Red Roof Inn is a name travelers recognize and know they will have a good price and clean rooms.”

Renovation of the existing 44 guest rooms will start in the spring, Parent said from his home in Central Florida.
“The contractor will divide the motel into quadrants and finish the rooms in the first quadrant then move on to the second quadrant, the third and the fourth with as little disruption to the guests as possible,” he said.
“That’s why we’re doing it in the shoulder (non-peak) season,” Parent said. “Converting the 44 will take 12 weeks,” and the tower addition will take six months to build.
He’s planning for the grand opening of the Red Roof Inn and Suites in the fall of 2014.
Parent’s Super 8 franchise agreement with Wyndham Hotel Group is expiring. He said he switched to Red Roof Inn once he learned that Wyndham had sold another of its franchises, for a Microtel Hotel, that would be competition for him less than 100 feet away.
Parent said Red Roof Inn has a strong presence throughout New York.
Its policy of improving all of its flagship properties before asking franchisees to upgrade is more helpful for individual owners financing improvements, he said.
“We are excited to start our relationship with Red Roof Inn, which has a one-brand focus,” he said.
He retained the architectural firm Silvestri Associates of Buffalo for the design.
“Years in the planning, it is our hope to make this as seamless a transition as possible,” Parent said, “and we will continue to give the traveling public an enjoyable stay in our property.”
Hill, who is also a trustee on the Malone Village Board, said the project adds lodging, which is sorely needed in Franklin County.
He said Red Roof Inn might be eligible to participate in a program under development that may offer tax incentives to businesses that open or expand in the village.
