SOUTH GLENS FALLS — Francis "John" Collins, age 93, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at the home of his daughter Susan, in South Glens Falls, N.Y.
John was born on Dec. 16, 1919, to Francis and Margaret (Conroy) Collins in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the eldest of 6 children. John graduated from Chazy Central School in 1938. He continued his education at Plattsburgh Business Institute. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married the love of his life, Ida "Connie" Cunningham, on August 23, 1944 in Montreal, Quebec Canada.
John began his long career as an accountant at Chazy Packing Company. He and Connie then moved to Varna, Ill. where they purchased a grain elevator and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Barbara Anne. Several years later, they returned to Plattsburgh and welcomed their second daughter, Susan Margaret. John worked at H.L. Neverett & Sons and McMartin Motors until his retirement in 1986. Even after retirement, John continued to balance checkbooks and give financial advice to family and friends. He never lost his ability or conscientiousness for handling financial matters. John had an amazing memory and delighted in sharing his stories of Chazy and Plattsburgh with family and friends. He was also a proud member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He remained a devout Roman Catholic throughout his life and was a supportive member of St. John the Baptist in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
John was predeceased by his loving wife on August 15, 1987; his parents; his sister, Mary Conroy; and his brother, Patrick Collins. John is survived by his two daughters, Barbara (James) Baker, Susan (Lynn) Tusa, and their sister Marilyn (Ron) Wylie and her son Mark; his grandchildren, Amy (Brad) Baker Rees, Karen Baker, Jennifer (Brad) Tusa Hughes, Daniel (Danielle) Tusa, Kara (Andrew) Tusa Coe; and eleven loving great-grandchildren, Megan, Katherine, Madeline, Grace, Elizabeth, Bailey, Mia, Liam, Kellen, Mariah, and Jordyn. John is also survived by his siblings, Michael Collins, Theresa Collins Conroy, and Catherine Collins Wheeler and several devoted nieces and nephews.
